Transmission of power (connection):
When you release the clutch pedal, the clutch pressure plate tightly presses the clutch plate onto the flywheel.
The rotational power of the engine flywheel is transmitted to the clutch plate through friction.
The driven hub at the center of the clutch plate meshes with the external spline of the transmission input shaft through its internal spline, thereby smoothly transmitting the engine's power to the inside of the transmission.
Implement separation (sliding):
When you press the clutch pedal, the clutch pressure plate separates from the clutch plate.
At this time, the engine (flywheel) is still rotating, but the clutch plates are no longer compressed.
Due to the slight clearance in the spline fit, the clutch plate (along with its hub) can slide slightly axially on the spline of the transmission input shaft, while still rotating slowly due to inertia.
This' sliding 'cuts off the engine's power, allowing you to smoothly shift gears.
